Update at 10:20 a.m.: Electric Reliability Council of Texas says in a press release that grid conditions have returned to normal, but continues to ask for conservation due to the cold weather expected to linger into tomorrow morning.
Says the release, demand for electricity today reached 55,486 MW in the hour leading up to 8 a.m. At that point, ERCOT issued the Energy Emergency Alert and implemented “demand response programs through some entities, which contract with ERCOT to reduce their electric use when needed.” Says Dan Woodfin, ERCOT director of System Operations, “Cold weather will continue through tomorrow morning, and we will continue to monitor conditions closely. Consumers are encouraged to use electricity wisely, and a conservation alert remains in effect throughout the ERCOT region.”
ERCOT says it doesn’t anticipate rotating outages, but nothing’s guaranteed: “Unexpected major losses of generation could force operators to proceed with additional emergency procedures to avoid an uncontrolled statewide blackout.”
